Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made headlines today by participating in Kashmir’s inaugural International Marathon, successfully completing the 21 km run at an impressive average pace of 5 minutes and 54 seconds per kilometre. This event marks a significant milestone in the region’s sporting landscape.

Flagging off the marathon from Polo Stadium, Abdullah expressed immense pride in his accomplishment, especially considering that he had never run more than 13 km prior to this event. His participation not only showcases his personal commitment to fitness but also highlights the increasing prominence of sporting events in Jammu and Kashmir.

Reflecting on the experience, the Chief Minister shared that the most memorable aspect of the marathon was running past his home with his family and fellow runners cheering him on. “Running past my home with family and others cheering me on was the best part,” Abdullah posted on social media, where he also detailed how he powered through the run with makeshift snacks—a banana and a couple of dates (khajoor).

In his social media post, Abdullah advocated for the benefits of running as a means to combat stress and improve mental health. “You don’t need drugs to feel good or beat stress. A good run, whether a kilometre or a marathon, is enough to clear the cobwebs & achieve a natural feeling of euphoria & enthusiasm. Try it, you won’t regret it. Let’s start running for a drug-free J&K,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The event also attracted notable personalities, including Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, who praised the significance of the marathon. Shetty highlighted that such events send a powerful message about Kashmir’s appeal as a tourist destination. “People want to come to Kashmir, and an event like this sends a message to the entire world that participants from all over the globe are coming here. It’s a big deal… It’s (J&K) a paradise for the world,” he remarked.

Abdullah’s participation comes against the backdrop of recent political developments in Jammu and Kashmir. In the recently held Union Territory elections, the National Conference-Congress alliance secured a decisive victory, marking the first polls in a decade and the first since the abrogation of Article 370. The National Conference (JKNC) won 42 seats, while the Congress secured six.

Omar Abdullah has now taken on the role of Chief Minister of the newly formed Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with Surinder Kumar Choudhary, who won from the Nowshera assembly seat, being sworn in as his deputy. This political shift and Abdullah’s active participation in community events reflect a renewed focus on development and engagement in the region.

Abdullah’s achievement in the marathon and his emphasis on health and wellness resonate with a broader narrative of resilience and hope for Jammu and Kashmir. As the region continues to navigate its political landscape, initiatives like the International Marathon may play a crucial role in fostering unity, promoting tourism, and encouraging a healthier lifestyle among its residents.
