One person died and at least 15 others fell ill after allegedly consuming biryani during a New Year celebration at Jagathgirigutta in Hyderabad, triggering concerns over food safety and hygiene during festive gatherings.
The deceased has been identified as Pandu, a resident of Bhavaninagar in Jagathgirigutta. According to preliminary information, the group had attended a locally organised New Year party on Wednesday night where biryani was served.
Soon after consuming the food, Pandu reportedly began vomiting and lost consciousness. His friends rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead while undergoing treatment. Fifteen others who had eaten the same food also complained of severe health issues, including vomiting, dizziness and stomach pain, and were admitted to hospital. Their condition is said to be stable.
Suspected food poisoning under probe
Police and health department officials suspect food poisoning, though confirmation is awaited pending medical reports. Samples of the food are expected to be collected and sent for laboratory analysis to determine whether contamination, poor storage or improper cooking led to the incident.
Local police have registered a case and begun questioning organisers of the party to ascertain the source of the food and whether safety norms were followed. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
Officials urge caution during celebrations
Health officials have once again urged the public to exercise caution while consuming food at large gatherings, especially during festivals and late-night events. Improper handling of meat, use of stale ingredients and lack of temperature control are known risk factors that can cause serious foodborne illnesses.
The incident has cast a shadow over otherwise peaceful New Year celebrations in Hyderabad, where police had reported tight security arrangements and largely incident-free festivities across the city.
Authorities have assured strict action if negligence is established, while also advising citizens to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea or unconsciousness after consuming outside food.
More details are awaited as investigations continue.
