India’s love affair with biryani shows no signs of slowing down. As food delivery habits continue to expand across cities and towns, biryani has once again emerged as the country’s most ordered dish in 2025, reaffirming its status as India’s ultimate comfort food.
According to the 10th edition of the annual How India Swiggy’d report released by Swiggy, Indians ordered a staggering 93 million plates of biryani this year. That translates to nearly 194 biryani orders every minute — more than three plates every second — across the platform.
Chicken biryani leads the feast
Among the many variations, chicken biryani continued to dominate, accounting for nearly 57.7 million orders and recording the highest repeat purchase rate. Its enduring popularity reflects biryani’s versatility and emotional connect — enjoyed equally as a quick weekday meal, a late-night indulgence, or a celebratory dish shared with family and friends.
The data also highlights how biryani cuts across regions, age groups and lifestyles, making it one of the few dishes with truly pan-Indian appeal.
What India ordered after biryani
While biryani held on to the top spot, several other favourites featured prominently in 2025’s food ordering trends.
Burgers and pizzas stay strong
Burgers ranked second with 44.2 million orders, led by chicken burgers, followed closely by vegetarian options. Pizzas came in third with about 40.1 million orders, with Margherita and classic variants continuing to be crowd favourites.
South Indian staples shine
Veg dosa recorded around 26.2 million orders, comfortably outperforming idli and medu vada. The data underlines the steady demand for South Indian tiffins as all-day comfort food.
Snacks and sweet cravings
Afternoon snack hours, particularly between 3 pm and 7 pm, saw strong demand for chicken rolls, nuggets, and the evergreen chai-samosa combination. Desserts such as white chocolate cake, chocolate cake, and gulab jamun also featured among the most ordered sweets.
Regional and global flavours on the rise
The report points to growing curiosity for regional cuisines. Orders for Pahari cuisine grew ninefold, while Malabari, Rajasthani and Malvani foods nearly doubled their volumes. At the same time, global cuisines gained traction, with Mexican dishes crossing 16 million orders and Tibetan cuisine exceeding 12 million.
More than convenience
The 2025 data suggests that food delivery in India now reflects lifestyle, identity and cultural pride as much as convenience. While global tastes are expanding, traditional and regional favourites continue to anchor India’s evolving food culture.
