Update at 5.42 PM

Jammu:  The Pakistani terrorist, who was identified as Usman Khan, (real name Mohammad Naved) said to be in his early 20’s told the police that he had infiltrated into India 12 days ago.

Khan seemed remarkably unperturbed at being captured and smiled as he answered questions thrown at him by the many cops who surrounded him. “There was just the two of us. We’ve been here for 12 days,” he said.

Usman Khan said they had “come through the jungles,” and added wryly, “Which bus would come here?” when asked how they had travelled. The terrorist revealed that they finished the food they had carried with them in the first three days and that they broke into a house for more.

The policemen later led him down the hill, with a cloth covering his face and his hands bound behind his back with a rope.

The police said preliminary questioning has revealed Usman is from Pakistan’s Faisalabad, where the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad, led by Maulana Masood Azhar has strong influence.

Earlier Report

Jammu: In a big breakthrough, villagers whom a Pakistan based terrorist had taken hostage, after he attacked a security convoy, helped catch him alive and in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur this morning was caught alive, said the police. Two soldiers were killed in the attack that took place on the highway near Samruli, about 10 km from Udhampur town, in an area that has been incident-free for at least four years.

The terrorist, believed to be in his 20s, was tied up in ropes and taken away by a large group of security and police personnel. Usman will be interrogated in a safe house, said Mr Rana. “We will ask him what route he had taken, what was his target, why they targeted BSF…” the officer said. Experts said it is a rare catch for the forces, given that terrorists come prepared to “kill and be killed,” as opposed to “kill and escape.”

Two terrorists in military uniforms stopped the bus in which Border Security Force soldiers were travelling and started firing. One terrorist was killed when the BSF returned fire. The second terrorist, Usman, raced into a village in the hilly and forested area, taking along three locals. He ran into a school, which was fortunately shut today because of planned protests.

“Preliminary questioning has revealed that the terrorist, Usman, is from Faislabad in Pakistan,” Danish Rana, Inspector General of Jammu, told NDTV. After nearly four hours, the terrorist, armed with an AK 47, was overpowered by his hostages just as he fired at a police party. One of the villagers says the man pleaded with them: “Let me go.” But they grabbed him by the neck and held fast until the police came.

The attack comes just weeks before talks between the National Security Advisers of India and Pakistan. Last week, seven were killed when terrorists, allegedly from across the border, attacked a bus and a police station in Punjab’s Gurdaspur. The police say they will question Usman about possible links to the Gurdaspur attack.
