The Income Tax Department has issued a final reminder to PAN card holders to link their PAN with Aadhaar before December 31, 2025. Failure to complete the process by this deadline will render the PAN inoperative, leading to serious tax-related consequences.

Taxpayers who have not yet linked PAN with Aadhaar will need to pay a late fee of ₹1,000 before completing the linking process. However, individuals who obtained their PAN after October 1, 2024 using an Aadhaar enrolment ID can link PAN with Aadhaar free of charge until the same deadline.

Why PAN–Aadhaar linking is important

The linking of PAN and Aadhaar has been made mandatory to improve transparency in the tax system and prevent misuse of PAN cards. An inoperative PAN can disrupt several financial and tax-related transactions.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar

If you have not yet completed the process, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal: www.incometax.gov.in
  2. Go to the ‘Quick Links’ section and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’
  3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers and click Validate
  4. If your PAN is already linked, a confirmation message will appear
  5. If not linked and the late fee has been paid, payment details will be verified
  6. Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’
  7. Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number
  8. Submit your request

The linking process may take 4 to 5 working days to be completed.

What happens if you miss the deadline

If PAN remains unlinked after December 31, 2025, it will become inoperative. This may result in:

  • No income tax refund being issued
  • No interest paid on pending refunds
  • Higher TDS deduction under applicable sections
  • Higher TCS collection on specified transactions

With the deadline fast approaching, taxpayers are advised to complete the linking process at the earliest to avoid inconvenience and financial penalties.
