Khushbu Kumari, a student from Danapur in Bihar, has found renewed hope of becoming a doctor after her emotional video exposing gender discrimination at home went viral, prompting intervention from the Union government.
In the viral clip, shared by News18, Kumari painfully described how her dream of studying science was crushed due to a condition set by her parents. “There’s always been a clear difference between my brother and me. He’s free to study, but we sisters are not even allowed a phone for learning,” she said, tearfully adding, “My mother said I could take science only if I scored above 400 marks. I got 399.”
Due to financial hardships, her parents admitted her into the arts stream, believing science education was too costly. “If we chose science, expenses would be higher,” her father, Upendra Rai, explained.
The video caught the attention of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who personally reached out via video call. Reassuring Kumari, he said, “Don’t worry, child. Both PM Modi and CM Nitish Kumar will ensure your education. Focus on your studies and don’t harbor resentment toward your parents—they did their best.”
Kumari expressed her desire to study in a good science college. Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh confirmed that arrangements are underway for her admission to Class 11 with a biology major in the upcoming academic year.
