At a time when Christmas celebrations are often driven by shopping and spending, a heart-warming gesture by a young boy in Pathanapuram has reminded many of the true spirit of the season.

Manikandan, fondly known as Nikhilesh, a Class 5 student of St Stephen’s High School, has set up a small stall near his home to distribute Christmas stars—completely free of cost—to friends and neighbours.

The makeshift shop stands at Edathara Udaya Junction, constructed using simple materials such as tree branches and a tarpaulin sheet for a roof. Inside, brightly coloured stars made from glitter paper are neatly arranged and hung in different sizes, creating a festive and welcoming sight.

‘Star shop, available free here’

A handwritten board placed in front of the stall reads, “Star shop, available free here”, drawing the curiosity of passers-by. Children from the neighbourhood stop by excitedly to choose their stars, while elders pause to appreciate the thought behind the initiative.

According to residents, Manikandan made the stars himself over several days, carefully cutting and shaping the glitter paper. His aim, he said, was simple—to make sure everyone could decorate their homes for Christmas, even if they could not afford to buy decorations.

Community comes together

The idea has quickly gained the support of local residents. Neighbours have encouraged the young boy, some offering help with materials, while others have praised his kindness and creativity. The stall has also become a small gathering point, bringing together children and adults alike in the days leading up to Christmas.

Parents in the area said the initiative sends a powerful message to children about generosity and sharing. “This is what Christmas is really about,” said a resident, adding that Manikandan’s effort has inspired conversations about kindness beyond gifts and money.

A lesson beyond the classroom

Teachers and community members noted that such gestures reflect values often spoken about in classrooms but rarely practised so visibly. For Manikandan, however, it was simply about spreading happiness.

As the stars from his stall light up homes across the neighbourhood, this small act from Pathanapuram stands as a reminder that the brightest Christmas decorations are often those made with compassion.
