As Christmas cheer spread across the world, NASA joined the celebrations with a celestial greeting, sharing a striking image of a nebula that resembles a glowing Christmas tree deep in space.

The image features NGC 2264, popularly known as the Christmas Tree Cluster. Located about 2,500 light-years from Earth, the nebula appears like a pine tree formed by young stars emitting blue and white light, surrounded by swirling green gas that resembles festive needles.

A festive image built from science

Originally released on December 17, 2024, the image is not a single photograph but a composite created by combining different types of astronomical data. The colourful stars come from X-ray observations made by Chandra X-ray Observatory, which detects high-energy radiation invisible to the human eye.

The green, pine-like structures surrounding the stars were captured using optical data from astrophotographer Michael Clow’s telescope in Arizona. Optical data records visible light, while X-ray data highlights energetic emissions from young, hot stars.

When merged, the datasets form a vivid image that resembles a decorated Christmas tree, blending advanced science with festive symbolism.

Bringing distant starlight home

NASA explained that Chandra acts like a specialised camera, translating X-ray energy into visible colours such as red, purple and white. Together with optical observations, the final image offers both scientific insight and visual wonder.

The agency said the nebula highlights the power of multi-wavelength astronomy, which allows scientists to understand star formation while also sharing the beauty of the universe with the public.

A Christmas Eve space milestone remembered

Marking Christmas Eve, NASA also recalled a historic moment from 1968, when astronauts aboard Apollo 8 became the first humans to orbit the Moon. During the mission, they captured the iconic Earthrise photograph, showing Earth rising over the lunar horizon — an image that transformed humanity’s view of its home planet.

By pairing festive cosmic imagery with a landmark space achievement, NASA reminded the world that exploration, science and wonder continue to unite people across borders, especially during the holiday season.
