In a heart-wrenching yet heroic incident, a pet dog lost its life while protecting its family from a venomous snake that entered their home in the Chilli Pokhari area.
Snake enters home, chaos unfolds
The incident occurred when a snake entered the residence of Jhuna Jena. Sensing danger, four pet dogs began barking and confronting the intruder, attempting to prevent it from advancing further into the house.
Despite efforts by the owner to intervene, the situation quickly escalated into a fierce struggle between the animals.
Phoney’s final stand
Among the dogs, Phoney, a six-year-old pet, displayed remarkable courage by taking on the snake directly. In doing so, the dog managed to stop the snake from moving deeper into the house, potentially preventing harm to the family.
However, during the encounter, Phoney was bitten by the snake. Despite the family’s attempts to save the dog, the venom proved fatal.
Both snake and dog die
By the time a local snake rescue team arrived, both the snake and the dog had died. The incident has left the family devastated, with the owner recalling the desperate moments of trying to stop the fight.
Experts later noted that certain actions, such as pouring water on a snakebite, can worsen the situation by spreading venom more quickly through the body.
A symbol of loyalty and courage
Phoney’s sacrifice has deeply moved residents in the area, with many describing the dog as a symbol of loyalty and bravery. The incident highlights the instinctive protective nature of animals and their deep bond with their families.
A reminder on safety
Authorities and animal welfare experts have urged people to remain cautious during snake encounters and seek immediate professional help. They also emphasised awareness about proper first-response measures in case of snakebites.
Phoney’s story stands as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary courage animals can show, even at the cost of their own lives.
