A post-graduate doctor on night duty at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital was allegedly assaulted by a patient’s husband late Monday night, sparking outrage among the medical community.

The incident occurred around 11:20 PM in the general ward during a dispute over replacing a cannula for administering an injection. Reynold (59), a resident of Cherumoodu in Perinad, Kollam, reportedly accused hospital staff of delaying treatment. When the PG doctor stepped in to address the situation, Reynold allegedly pulled off the doctor’s face mask and physically assaulted him.

Hospital staff intervened quickly, handing Reynold over to security, who then turned him over to the police. He was arrested, produced in court, and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. Following the arrest, the patient involved in the incident was transferred to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).

In response to the attack, PG doctors have announced a protest on Wednesday, raising strong concerns about inadequate security measures. They pointed to a serious lack of security staff and non-functional CCTV cameras, making healthcare workers vulnerable to violence.

This disturbing incident adds to a growing number of attacks on medical professionals in Kerala, renewing urgent calls for stronger safety protocols in government hospitals.
