Kolkata’s Jadavpur University is once again under scrutiny after a second-year postgraduate student reported being verbally abused and threatened for four hours inside the hostel on Tuesday. The student alleged the harassment was retaliation for his stance against ragging.

On Wednesday, the student formally lodged a complaint with the university’s anti-ragging committee. Vice-chancellor Bhaskar Gupta confirmed the complaint, stating an inquiry committee was immediately set up to investigate.

According to the complaint, the student visited a friend at the main hostel on Tuesday. After his friend left for an iftar gathering, two fourth-year engineering students spotted him and allegedly summoned others. The group reportedly subjected him to severe verbal abuse, accused him of tarnishing the hostel’s image, threatened harm to his mother, and coerced him to write and post an apology dictated by them.

Shockingly, one of the accused students is already linked to the infamous August 2023 ragging case, which resulted in the death of a first-year student who had jumped from the hostel after enduring harassment. That case led to the arrest of 12 students, some still incarcerated.

Tuesday’s incident unfolded at the same hostel, highlighting persistent safety issues despite prior measures. The university has since relocated first-year students to a separate facility and begun installing CCTV cameras.

This latest episode also follows confrontations on campus in recent months, as students demand union elections and stronger actions against ragging.
