New Delhi: As contributors and brave souls received various awards befitting their service to the country on Republic day, the Ministry of Defence named Captain Vijay Varma, among others, to receive the Nao Sena Medal. Captain Varma received the medal for gallantry for his rescue efforts during the Kerala floods.
Captain Varma, a Naval pilot who was part of the Operation Madad during the Kerala floods, rescued two pregnant women by airlifting them during the disastrous floods in Kerala last year. A video of him airlifting one of the women went viral on social media and earned him a lot of praise from the people, who named him a hero. The Captain, who was in command of the Chetak aircraft, rescued 24 stranded survivors in total during these floods.
Naval officer Abhilash Tomy, the first Indian to solo circumnavigate the globe on sail non-stop, will also receive the Nao Sena Medal for devotion to duty.
Captain Varma, Officer Tomy and others will receive their medals later today.
