Next week, a groundbreaking event will take place in Pimpri Chinchwad as six trans women marry their male partners in what is being hailed as the first mass wedding of its kind in India. The ceremony, scheduled for January 28 at Balaji Lawns in Kalewadi, marks a historic moment for the transgender community, as it will be the first time that trans women are legally married under the Hindu Marriage Act with all necessary documents verified and legal procedures completed.

Vishal Jadhav, president of Nari the Women, an organization dedicated to empowering transgender individuals, expressed his pride in the event. “This is for the first time, not just in Maharashtra, but in India, that six trans women will be married with full legal formalities,” he said. He also emphasized the need for societal change, urging that transgender people be encouraged to work and be treated with the same respect as others.

One of the brides, Madhuri, shared her excitement about the wedding. “I have danced in many weddings and wondered why I didn’t deserve one myself. But now, I’m finally getting married, and it feels very special,” she said. Her soon-to-be husband runs a paan stall.

Another trans woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, reflected on the significance of the event, saying, “While my parents have accepted it, my husband’s family is yet to do so. This is a huge step for us.”

The initiative is part of Nari the Women’s ongoing efforts to provide dignified employment and opportunities for transgender individuals in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
