Mangaldoi, Assam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, alleging that the party supported infiltrators, Pakistan-backed terrorists, and anti-national forces instead of standing with the Indian Army. Addressing a massive public gathering at Mangaldoi in Darrang district, PM Modi also laid the foundation stones for health and infrastructure projects worth ₹6,300 crore in Assam.
Attack on Congress and defence of national security
The prime minister accused the Congress of “betraying” the people of Assam and the nation by siding with anti-national forces. Referring to the military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan, he said:
“The Congress, instead of supporting the Indian Army, backs terrorists groomed by Pakistan. During Operation Sindoor, while our forces destroyed terrorist infrastructure, Congress was engaged in protecting infiltrators and anti-national forces.”
PM Modi further alleged that the Congress had historically failed Assam, recalling the “wounds inflicted” during the 1962 Chinese aggression under then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Praise for Assam government
PM Modi praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for “evicting infiltrators from encroached land” and allowing local farmers to reclaim agricultural land. He stressed that the BJP would not permit any conspiracy to alter the state’s demographic balance.
“The BJP will not allow infiltrators to grab land, insult women and girls, and conspire to change demography, which is a threat to national security,” he said.
He also expressed anguish at what he described as “Congress’ insults” to Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, adding that the BJP was committed to realising the dreams of Assam’s cultural icons.
Double-engine development in Assam
Shifting focus to development, the PM contrasted the Congress’ decades-long rule with the BJP’s record in infrastructure. He claimed Congress governments built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra river, while the BJP-led governments had constructed six such bridges in the past 10 years.
Highlighting Assam’s growth, PM Modi said the state’s economy had registered a 13 per cent growth rate, crediting the “double-engine government” of the Centre and the state.
“The Centre and the state government are developing Assam as a health hub. The Northeast has a big role to play in achieving the dream of Viksit Bharat,” he said.
Major projects launched worth ₹6,300 crore
During his visit, PM Modi laid the foundation stones for a series of health and infrastructure initiatives:
-
Darrang Medical College and Hospital with a nursing college and a GNM school (₹570 crore investment).
-
Narengi-Kuruwa bridge, 2.9 km long, with an estimated cost of ₹1,200 crore.
-
Guwahati Ring Road project, a 118.5 km stretch connecting Kamrup and Darrang districts in Assam and Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya, worth ₹4,530 crore.
He also urged citizens to embrace swadeshi products, saying that supporting indigenous industries was essential for the bright future of children.
Conclusion
PM Modi’s visit to Assam was marked by sharp political rhetoric against the Congress alongside major development announcements. While reiterating the BJP’s commitment to safeguarding Assam’s culture and national security, he positioned the party’s double-engine government as a driver of growth, infrastructure, and healthcare for the region.
