New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed strong condemnation over an attack inside the Supreme Court targeting Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud. Calling it “utterly reprehensible,” the Prime Minister said the incident has “angered every Indian” and reflects a disturbing breach of judicial dignity.
Modi speaks with the Chief Justice
According to officials, Modi personally called the Chief Justice soon after the incident to express concern and solidarity. He praised the CJI for remaining calm and composed despite the provocation, adding that his response exemplified India’s faith in constitutional justice and judicial restraint.
The Prime Minister said that acts of violence or disrespect towards any constitutional institution must be condemned unequivocally and that India’s judiciary stands as a pillar of democracy which deserves complete respect.
What happened inside the Supreme Court
The incident took place during court proceedings when a 71-year-old advocate suddenly hurled a shoe in the direction of the Chief Justice. The advocate reportedly shouted slogans referring to alleged insults to “Sanatan Dharma.” The object missed its target, and security personnel swiftly restrained and escorted the individual out of the courtroom.
Despite the disruption, the CJI continued the hearing without interruption, reportedly instructing the staff not to overreact and allowing the court to proceed as usual.
Immediate disciplinary action
Following the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended the advocate’s licence pending an inquiry. The council termed the act as an “attack on the sanctity of the judiciary” and called for permanent disbarment after investigation. Legal associations across the country echoed the condemnation, describing the episode as an affront to judicial independence.
Widespread political condemnation
Political leaders from across parties joined in denouncing the incident. Several ministers and opposition figures alike said the act was an assault on constitutional values and an insult to the nation’s highest judicial authority. Many also lauded the CJI’s composure, calling it a testament to judicial dignity and emotional restraint.
Broader significance
The attack has reignited discussions around courtroom security and decorum. Experts suggested that while the judiciary has traditionally maintained an open environment, stronger measures may now be necessary to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Observers noted that the unity of response—from the government, legal fraternity, and civil society—underscored the deep respect for the judiciary as the guardian of India’s constitutional order.
