In a candid conversation on American scientist Lex Fridman’s podcast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered strong criticism of the United Nations and other international institutions, branding them “almost irrelevant” amidst escalating global conflicts, including Middle East wars and China-US friction.

“These global bodies have stagnated. No reforms, no adaptability. Institutions like the UN are failing to uphold laws and order. Those ignoring rules continue unchecked,” PM Modi stated firmly.

Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, he highlighted how it shattered illusions of national supremacy and exposed vulnerabilities worldwide. “Every country was humbled. We hoped the world would emerge wiser, moving towards a new order focused on peace. Sadly, the opposite happened — disintegration, uncertainty, more wars.”

PM Modi stressed that in an interconnected, interdependent world, expansionist policies are outdated. He called for nations to prioritise collaboration and development over rivalry. “No country can thrive in isolation. Everywhere I go, leaders voice concerns over persistent conflicts. It’s time to transition to unity and mutual support,” he added.

Reinforcing India’s long-standing push for reform, Modi recalled his previous UNGA address, advocating for transformation to retain relevance. India continues to press for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), arguing the current 1945 structure no longer mirrors modern geopolitical realities. The US, UK, and France have expressed support for India’s bid.

As global tensions rise, Modi’s message is clear: outdated institutions and divisive strategies must give way to cooperation and inclusive governance.
