Hardoi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway, a major infrastructure corridor connecting Meerut to Prayagraj.
The high-speed expressway is expected to significantly enhance connectivity across Uttar Pradesh and boost industrial investment, logistics efficiency and regional development.
Connectivity across 12 districts
The expressway passes through 12 districts, including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj.
Officials said the project will reduce travel time, improve road safety and facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers across the state.
‘New lifeline for development’
Speaking at the inauguration event in Hardoi, the Prime Minister described the expressway as a transformative step for the state.
“The way the Ganga has been the lifeline of Uttar Pradesh for thousands of years, similarly, this expressway will become a new lifeline for the state’s development,” Modi said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also termed the project a “lifeline,” stating that it would connect villages, farmers, entrepreneurs and youth while accelerating economic growth.
Modern design and safety features
Developed under a public-private partnership model, the expressway has been built as a six-lane corridor, with provision for expansion to eight lanes. It is designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph.
Key features include an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), CCTV surveillance, emergency call boxes, ambulances and patrol units to enhance commuter safety.
A 3.2-km airstrip near Shahjahanpur has also been constructed to allow emergency landings by the Indian Air Force.
Boost to industry and employment
The project includes Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics Clusters (IMLCs) along the route, featuring warehouses, cold storage units and food processing hubs.
These facilities are expected to attract investment, generate employment and strengthen supply chains, particularly for agriculture and small industries.
Union Minister Pankaj Chaudhary said the expressway is among the longest in the country and represents a significant infrastructure boost for the state.
Integration with major corridors
The Ganga Expressway will connect with several key corridors, including the Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow, Bundelkhand and Gorakhpur Link expressways, forming an extensive transport network across Uttar Pradesh.
Officials believe this integrated network will play a vital role in supporting the state’s ambition of becoming a trillion-dollar economy.
Conclusion
The inauguration of the Ganga Expressway marks a major milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure development. With improved connectivity, enhanced logistics and industrial opportunities, the project is expected to drive long-term economic growth across the region.
