Tremor hits Cebu province
The earthquake struck off the coast of the central Philippine island province of Cebu at 9:59 pm local time on Tuesday (13:59 GMT), according to the United States Geological Survey. Cebu, home to around 90,000 residents in the northern city of Bogo, was among the worst-affected areas.
Following the initial tremor, four more earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher were recorded in the region, compounding the damage. As of Wednesday, local authorities confirmed at least 69 deaths and nearly 150 injuries.
State of calamity declared
The provincial government of Cebu has declared a “state of calamity” in affected areas. The powerful quake caused power outages and structural damage, including collapsed buildings and houses. The provincial government has called for medical volunteers to assist in relief efforts.
Pamela Baricuatro, Governor of Cebu, said in a video posted on social media, “We are still assessing the damage, but it could be worse than we think.” She confirmed that emergency medical teams are being deployed to provide aid to the injured, while an unspecified number of houses and a hospital were reported damaged.
India’s solidarity
Prime Minister Modi’s message reflects India’s support for the Philippines during this crisis. Officials in both countries have emphasised the importance of prompt disaster response and international cooperation in addressing the humanitarian needs of affected residents.
The quake has left authorities grappling with widespread destruction, and rescue operations are ongoing to provide medical assistance and restore essential services. The Philippine government has appealed for volunteers and emergency aid as the situation continues to develop.
