New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conveyed deep condolences to the people of Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which has led to 56 deaths and left 21 people missing amid severe flooding and landslides. In a message on X, he said, “My heartfelt condolences to the people of Sri Lanka who have lost their loved ones due to Cyclone Ditwah. I pray for the safety, comfort and swift recovery of all affected families.”
Reaffirming India’s solidarity with its “closest maritime neighbour,” the Prime Minister said India has swiftly dispatched relief material and essential Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) support under Operation Sagar Bandhu. He added that New Delhi stands fully prepared to extend further assistance as the situation continues to evolve.
PM Modi emphasised that India’s support reflects the country’s Neighbourhood First policy and its maritime vision MAHASAGAR, underscoring New Delhi’s commitment to stand firmly with Sri Lanka during its time of crisis.
INS Vikrant to join flood rescue efforts
In a significant move, India will deploy its aircraft carrier INS Vikrant to assist in Sri Lanka’s ongoing rescue operations. Officials confirmed on Friday that Colombo formally requested the utilisation of the carrier’s aircraft to support relief efforts across flood-hit regions impacted by Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the eastern Trincomalee area earlier this week.
The Sri Lankan Navy noted that INS Vikrant had recently docked in Colombo on November 25–26 as part of preparations for the upcoming International Fleet Review 2025, scheduled for November 30. The vessel’s proximity to Sri Lanka positioned it for rapid mobilisation as weather conditions worsened.
Cyclone Ditwah leaves widespread devastation
Sri Lanka has been grappling with extensive damage due to flooding, swollen rivers, collapsing embankments and multiple landslides. On Friday, the government declared a public holiday, excluding essential services, to manage the crisis and streamline rescue operations.
According to the Disaster Management Centre, 43,991 people from 12,313 families have been affected so far across several districts. Emergency teams continue to search for those missing, as evacuation efforts progress in low-lying and high-risk zones.
What is Operation Sagar Bandhu?
Operation Sagar Bandhu is a flagship humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) initiative of the Indian Navy, designed to assist neighbouring countries during large-scale natural disasters or emergencies. The operation builds on India’s maritime philosophy—‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ (SAGAR)—with “Bandhu” symbolising friendship and partnership.
Under this mission, India deploys naval ships, aircraft, medical units and essential relief supplies to nations hit by cyclones, floods and other crises. Support includes rescue operations, transport of relief material, medical aid, logistics, and the restoration of critical services.
India–Sri Lanka cooperation strengthens in crisis
India and Sri Lanka share close historical, cultural and maritime ties. Over the years, the Indian Navy has repeatedly stepped in to support its neighbour during natural calamities. The rapid response under Operation Sagar Bandhu reinforces India’s role as a dependable partner in the Indian Ocean region.
As Sri Lanka works to recover from the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah, India’s swift humanitarian outreach is expected to significantly bolster relief and rehabilitation efforts.
