Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on his 93rd birth anniversary, lauding his contributions to India during his decades of public service.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi wrote, “Tributes to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. We recall his contributions to our nation during his long years in public life.”
Born on September 26, 1932, Singh was an eminent economist who served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. He later held the position of Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996, spearheading economic reforms that earned global recognition. He went on to become India’s 13th Prime Minister, serving from 2004 to 2014.

During his tenure as Prime Minister, Singh’s government introduced several landmark initiatives, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), later renamed Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), and the Right to Information Act (RTI) in 2005, enhancing transparency and citizen engagement in governance.
Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge also paid tribute to the former PM, describing him as a man of humility and wisdom who carried himself with “quiet dignity.” In his post on X, Kharge called Singh the “gentle architect of India’s economic transformation,” adding that his reforms opened new opportunities, created a thriving middle class, and lifted countless families out of poverty.
“He believed deeply in fairness and inclusivity, ensuring that growth went hand in hand with compassion through welfare measures that touched the lives of millions. His leadership showed us that integrity in public life is not just possible, but powerful,” Kharge wrote.
