New Delhi: Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid homage to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack on its first anniversary, reaffirming the nation’s resolve against terrorism and expressing solidarity with the bereaved families.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said the innocent lives lost in the April 22, 2025 attack “will never be forgotten” and described the tragedy as one that continues to weigh heavily on the nation’s conscience.

Nation remembers victims

“Remembering the innocent lives lost in the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack on this day last year. They will never be forgotten,” Modi said, adding that his thoughts remain with families coping with the loss.

He emphasised that India stands united in grief and determination, asserting that the country will never bow to terrorism and that such acts would not succeed.

Background of the attack

On April 22, 2025, terrorists opened fire on civilians in Pahalgam in south Kashmir, killing 26 people, most of them tourists. The attack had triggered widespread outrage across the country.

Reports indicated that victims were allegedly segregated based on religion before being shot in front of their families, intensifying the shock and condemnation nationwide.

India’s military response

In response to the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

According to official sources, nine major terror launchpads linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen were destroyed, and over 100 terrorists were neutralised.

The operation led to a brief escalation with Pakistan, lasting four days, before a ceasefire was reached on May 10 following Islamabad’s request.

Subsequently, Indian forces carried out Operation Mahadev, tracking down and eliminating the three attackers responsible for the Pahalgam killings.

Army reiterates strong stance

The Indian Army also marked the anniversary with a strong message, asserting that acts against India would be met with assured and decisive responses.

In posts on social media, the Army emphasised that justice would always be served when “boundaries of humanity are crossed,” reinforcing its commitment to national security.

Security tightened in Pahalgam

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have heightened security in Pahalgam ahead of anniversary events. Additional forces have been deployed, and surveillance has been intensified to ensure peaceful commemorations.

Political leaders, civil society members and families of the victims are expected to participate in tribute events.

Memorial honours victims

A memorial has been erected at Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam to honour those who lost their lives. Constructed in black marble, it bears the names of all 26 victims—including 25 tourists and a local pony handler—and stands along the banks of the Lidder river.

The site has become a place of remembrance, symbolising both grief and resilience.

Conclusion

As the nation marks one year since the Pahalgam terror attack, tributes from leaders and citizens alike reflect a collective resolve to combat terrorism. While the pain of loss endures for affected families, the reaffirmation of unity and determination continues to shape India’s response to such threats.
