PM Modi reflects on childhood struggles, life lessons, and spiritual influences
In a heartfelt conversation with US-based podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened up about his modest upbringing in Gujarat, sharing personal stories from his early life marked by poverty. Despite facing hardships, Modi emphasized he never felt weighed down but remained optimistic and driven.
Recounting his school days, he recalled, “I grew up in extreme poverty. I used to gather leftover chalk pieces at school to clean and polish my white canvas shoes.” Reflecting on his father’s tea stall, Modi said it became a unique classroom for him. “Sitting at the tea shop, I learned valuable lessons from every customer who walked in. Those lessons continue to guide me in public life today,” he remarked.
PM Modi also expressed a deep sense of purpose, stating, “I believe I am here for a mission, sent by a higher power. But I am never alone; the force that sent me walks alongside me.”
Further, Modi credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for instilling in him strong values of service and dedication. Calling it a “sacred” organisation, he praised its nearly century-long work inspiring citizens to serve the nation selflessly.
In addition, he acknowledged the profound influence of the Ramakrishna Mission, Swami Vivekananda, and Swami Atmasthananda on his spiritual journey, attributing many of his guiding principles to their teachings.
