Rahul Gandhi, poised to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition, continues the legacy of the Gandhi family in this pivotal position. His mother, Sonia Gandhi, held the position from 1999 to 2004, and his father, Rajiv Gandhi, served as Leader of the Opposition from 1989 to 1990.
Since its inception in 1969 with Ram Suhag Singh, the role of Leader of the Opposition has evolved to become crucial in India’s parliamentary democracy. The position entails substantial responsibilities, including the appointment of key officials such as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), as well as members of important commissions like the CBI, NHRC, and Lokayukta.
Om Birla’s election as the Speaker was uncontested, announced by Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab after the Congress-led Opposition, under the leadership of K Suresh, decided not to contest. Prime Minister Modi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accompanied Birla to the Speaker’s chair, with Rahul Gandhi participating in the ceremonial proceedings.
“I congratulate you on your re-election to this chair,” remarked PM Modi, expressing confidence in Birla’s leadership for the next five years. He praised Birla’s friendly demeanor, expecting it to foster a constructive atmosphere in the House.
“On behalf of the entire opposition and the INDIA alliance, congratulations,” added Rahul Gandhi, highlighting Birla’s role as the ultimate representative of the people in Parliament.
