New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the nation at 8:30 pm today, according to official sources, sparking widespread speculation over the subject of his speech.

There has been no formal announcement regarding the agenda of the address, leading to heightened curiosity across political circles and among the public.

Timing significant after bill setback

The timing of the Prime Minister’s address is notable, coming just a day after the failure of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. The development has triggered sharp reactions from both the government and the Opposition.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill sought to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816 seats, in order to implement 33 per cent reservation for women.

However, the bill fell short of the required two-thirds majority. While 298 Members of Parliament voted in favour, 230 opposed it. Out of 528 votes cast, at least 352 were needed for the bill to pass, leading to its rejection.

Linked bills also put on hold

Following the failure of the main legislation, two related bills—one on delimitation and another on increasing Lok Sabha seats—were not put to vote. The Centre maintained that these proposals were “intrinsically linked” to the women’s reservation legislation.

The setback has intensified political debate, with both sides accusing each other of undermining the interests of women.

PM’s remarks and Opposition response

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi reportedly told his Cabinet that the Opposition had made a serious mistake by not supporting the bill. He is said to have remarked that those opposing the legislation would “face consequences” for failing to back women’s empowerment.

Sources indicated that the Opposition plans to write to the Prime Minister, urging the implementation of an earlier version of the women’s reservation proposal.

Parties associated with the INDIA Alliance are also expected to hold press conferences across the country. They are likely to reiterate their support for women’s reservation while criticising the government’s approach, alleging attempts to alter the political framework under the guise of reform.

Previous national addresses

The Prime Minister’s last address to the nation was in September 2025, when he outlined the rollout of GST 2.0 reforms. Prior to that, he addressed the country in May 2025 regarding Operation Sindoor, India’s response to a terror attack in Pahalgam.

Given this context, today’s address is expected to carry political and policy significance.

Nationwide attention on upcoming speech

With no official details disclosed, the upcoming address has drawn nationwide attention. Observers believe the Prime Minister may address recent political developments, governance priorities, or other key national issues.

Conclusion

As the country awaits clarity on the subject of the Prime Minister’s address, the backdrop of recent parliamentary developments has added to the anticipation. The speech is expected to set the tone for the next phase of political discourse and policy direction.
