New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to West Bengal and Odisha on June 20 and 21, during which he will participate in the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations, inaugurate major development projects, commission naval ships and join President Droupadi Murmu in programmes focused on tribal development and state infrastructure.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the visit will cover a wide range of events across both states, including development initiatives in agriculture, railways, fisheries, rural development, defence and industrial infrastructure.
The visit is also expected to highlight the Centre’s focus on regional development, farmer welfare and tribal empowerment.
Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata
New Delhi officials said the Prime Minister will participate in the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations in Kolkata on June 21 and address the gathering.
The theme for International Day of Yoga 2026 is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, emphasising the role of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, emotional resilience and active ageing.
Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted India’s proposal to observe June 21 as International Day of Yoga in 2014, the annual event has been celebrated globally. Prime Minister Modi has led Yoga Day programmes from various locations including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Mysuru, Srinagar, Visakhapatnam and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Kolkata event is expected to witness participation from yoga enthusiasts, students, government officials and members of the public.
Three naval ships to be commissioned
During his visit to Kolkata, the Prime Minister will commission three indigenously designed and built naval vessels at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.
The ships to be commissioned are:
- INS Dunagiri
- INS Sanshodhak
- INS Agray
The commissioning ceremony is expected to underline India’s growing indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and efforts to strengthen maritime security.
Development projects in West Bengal
On June 20, Modi will participate in the ‘Paschimbanga Divas’ celebrations at Tarakeswar and inaugurate as well as lay foundation stones for several development projects.
The initiatives span sectors such as railways, agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry and rural development. According to the PMO, these projects are intended to improve infrastructure, create employment opportunities and enhance socio-economic development across West Bengal.
The Prime Minister will also release the 23rd instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi.
Under the latest instalment, more than Rs 18,880 crore will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of over 9.44 crore farmers across the country.
In West Bengal alone, more than 45 lakh beneficiaries are expected to receive over Rs 900 crore, taking the cumulative PM-KISAN disbursement in the state to more than Rs 15,000 crore.
Nationwide disbursements under the scheme have now crossed Rs 4.46 lakh crore since its launch in 2019.
Focus on agriculture and fisheries
The Prime Minister will also launch several major agricultural initiatives in West Bengal, including:
- Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana
- Digital Agriculture Mission through Agri Stack
- National Mission on Natural Farming
- Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana
Officials said that during 2026-27, the crop insurance scheme aims to provide coverage to nearly 50 lakh farmers across about 14 lakh hectares of agricultural land in West Bengal, with an insured crop value estimated at around Rs 28,140 crore.
Modi will also inaugurate a modernised fishing harbour at Fraserganj and a modern fish market at Sainthia.
Additionally, he will inaugurate the Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Semen Bank for Goats at Haringhata.
Railway projects worth approximately Rs 590 crore will also be inaugurated or have their foundation stones laid during the visit.
Joint programme with President Murmu in Odisha
Later on June 20, Prime Minister Modi and President Droupadi Murmu will jointly participate in programmes in Odisha, marking a rare occasion where both constitutional leaders will attend multiple events together.
The leaders will visit Pahadpur village in Mayurbhanj district, where they will offer prayers at the sacred tribal groves:
- Santhali Jahera
- Ho Jahera
They will also visit a skill development centre and a local school to review initiatives aimed at improving education and socio-economic opportunities in tribal communities.
Projects worth Rs 47,600 crore for Odisha
The Prime Minister and President will participate in a programme at Rairangpur marking the completion of two years of the BJP government in Odisha.
During the event, Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for development projects worth more than Rs 47,600 crore across sectors including energy, industrial infrastructure and road connectivity.
According to the PMO, the projects are expected to improve infrastructure, enhance energy security, strengthen connectivity and generate employment opportunities across the state.
