New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end hostilities in West Asia, expressing hope that the agreement would help restore peace, stability and normal trade movement across the region.
The Prime Minister said the prolonged conflict had caused significant economic disruptions globally and resulted in the loss of lives in several countries.
“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
He further stated that India hopes the implementation of the agreement will contribute to lasting peace and ensure the uninterrupted flow of global commerce.
“India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce. We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” he added.
US announces agreement with Iran
The development comes after US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached with Iran, paving the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the US naval blockade in the region.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the agreement as complete and congratulated all parties involved.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!” Trump wrote.
He further announced that he had authorised the immediate removal of the US naval blockade and the reopening of the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies.
“Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump said, adding that the waterway would reopen following the signing of the agreement.
Iran confirms peace memorandum
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, confirmed that a memorandum outlining the peace agreement had been finalised and would be formally signed on June 19.
According to Iranian media reports, two key provisions of the agreement have already taken effect.
These include an immediate and permanent end to hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, and the lifting of the US naval blockade imposed on Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes, handling a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption in the region has direct implications for global energy prices, shipping costs and international trade.
India emphasises peace and commerce
India has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve tensions in West Asia. The region remains strategically important for India due to its energy imports, trade links and the presence of a large Indian diaspora.
The Prime Minister’s remarks underline India’s support for efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and restoring stability in one of the world’s most geopolitically sensitive regions.
If implemented successfully, the agreement could ease concerns over energy supplies, reduce shipping disruptions and contribute to broader economic stability across global markets.
