Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on gram panchayat presidents to promote holistic health by raising awareness about yoga and millets, which he noted are beneficial for soil health and combating climate change. In a letter to Gram Pradhans, PM Modi also conveyed his best wishes to all Gram Panchayat residents for the 10th International Yoga Day.

“As grassroots custodians of democratic institutions, I urge you to spearhead a people-led movement for holistic health by spreading awareness about yoga and millets,” PM Modi stated in his letter dated June 13, 2024.

He emphasized that organizing yoga programs in panchayat premises, schools, Anganwadis, Community Health Centres, and similar venues will inspire people, particularly the youth, to adopt a sustainable, stress-free lifestyle. “Greetings and best wishes to everyone for the International Day of Yoga,” he added.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the International Day of Yoga celebrates yoga’s global impact. “Countries worldwide are preparing to celebrate the 10th International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2024. This day honors the positive changes yoga has brought to our lives and the global community. This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society,’ will further our efforts to build a healthy nation,” PM Modi wrote.

He noted that yoga is vital for physical and mental well-being, while millets promote health through nutrition. “Yoga, a gift from our ancient culture, enhances holistic health and wellness. Similarly, superfoods like millets, or Shree Anna, support good health through nutrition, preserve soil health, and help fight climate change. The increasing demand for millets also boosts the income of our small farmers,” he said.

The United Nations recognized the universal appeal of yoga by proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, following a proposal by India endorsed by a record 175 member states. Prime Minister Modi introduced this proposal during the 69th session of the General Assembly, stating, “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. It embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action, offering a holistic approach valuable for our health and well-being. Yoga is not just exercise; it is a way to discover a sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and nature.”
