New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on June 9, became the first world leader to visit the island nation of Sri Lanka after it was devastated by the bombings on Easter Sunday, April 21.
It can be recalled that the serial bombings on April 21 left over 250 people dead and many more severely injured. The responsibility for the attack was claimed by a local Jihadi group and ISIS affiliate, National Thowheeth Jama’ath.
PM Modi visited the island nation when he was on his way back from the Maldives, where he went for his first overseas visit after getting re-elected as Prime Minister.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe received PM Modi at the airport, and the latter’s first stop was the church that was attacked during the Easter Sunday bombings.
Paying tribute to the fallen, Modi said that cowardly acts of terror can’t defeat Sri Lanka’s spirit and added that the people of India stand in solidarity with them.
Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India Austin Fernando said, on Friday, that Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka shows India’s humane approach towards their island neighbours.
