New Delhi: As the Lok Sabha election campaign came to an end, PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the Kedarnath shrine came under attack from the opposition. Led by the Congress, the opposition took to Twitter to slam the Prime Minister for walking on a “red carpet” in God’s abode.

“True devotees sacrifice their ego and arrogance before going to the abode of God, not after laying a red carpet. Modi ji, hope you know that much,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted.

Other political leaders soon joined the bandwagon, mocking PM Modi for getting his photos snapped at the shrine, one of the holiest for the Hindus.

AAP’s Sanjay Singh tweeted PM Modi’s picture, taken as he gestured to pay obeisance to the deity. “Hail the God of Camera,” he mocked.

CPIM general secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged that PM Modi’s visit was a violation of the model code of conduct, tweeting, “Religion is a matter of personal faith and EC has reiterated that it cannot be used for garnering votes. But Modi violates the MCC brazenly with footage of his Kedarnath religious activity over TV channels during silent period before polling. And EC continues to sleep on the job.”

Netizens, on the other hand came up with more humorous taunts…

* Is it #Cannes2019 ? Why is the red carpet treatment at Baba #Kedarnath temple for a man who has admitted of living major part of life like a Sanyasi !

* Is there a red carpet for all pilgrims at Kedarnath or is that reserved only for some special pilgrims? I thought everyone was equal in front of god…

* This is my second fav Modi costume after his stunning monogram suit. So so proud to have the most fashion forward PM. Modi, is Ab Fab

* The red carpet was essential to save the flowing silken robe of our Lama ji.

* All the greatest rishis of old had full camera crews in their caves as they meditated.

* No meditation is complete or meaningful without the right attire, red carpet and of course a stage managed photo opportunity.

It can be noted that the PM is currently on a two-day visit to Uttarakhand. He was photographed meditating in a holy cave near Kedarnath. On Saturday, the Prime Minister also offered prayers at the Kedarnath temple and is set to visit the Badrinath shrine on Sunday.
