Tension gripped the locality outside the Andersonpet home of KV Kuppam MLA and Puratchi Bharatham party leader ‘Poovai’ Jagan Moorthy on Saturday. Over 120 police officers from Avadi commissionerate and Tiruvallur district assembled to question the legislator in connection with the kidnapping of a 16-year-old boy that took place last month.
The case revolves around Indrachand, a minor who went missing from Kalambakkam near Thiruvalangadu on May 10. His elder brother, 23-year-old Dhanush, had married 21-year-old Vijaya Sri on April 15, against her family’s approval. The couple had connected through social media before eloping.
Unable to trace their daughter, Vijaya Sri’s father Vanaraja, along with his brother Manikandan and a relative named Ganesan, all hailing from Theni district, approached a politician in Tiruvallur seeking help. Soon after, Indrachand was allegedly taken from Dhanush’s home by a group that included retired police inspector Maheshwari and a lawyer named Sarath, who arrived in an official police vehicle reportedly sanctioned by a high-ranking officer.
Dhanush’s mother quickly called the emergency number, alerting authorities. However, local police initially downplayed the situation due to the involvement of influential figures. As public attention grew, the boy was released. Following a directive by North Zone IGP Asra Garg, a full-fledged inquiry was launched, focusing on misuse of police resources.
Five individuals have been arrested so far, while the involvement of the MLA and senior cop remains under investigation. Police attempted to question Moorthy on Saturday evening but he was not at home.
