The Supreme Court’s direction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the September 27 Karur stampede and the formation of a three-member monitoring committee has drawn strong support from opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, including the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), AIADMK, and BJP.

The order, issued on Monday (October 13, 2025), has been hailed as a step towards ensuring justice and transparency in the investigation into the tragedy that claimed several lives.

Opposition welcomes Supreme Court verdict

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision, TVK president Vijay said in a post on X, “Justice will prevail,” expressing confidence that the truth would emerge through the CBI inquiry.

The AIADMK, in a social media statement, said its stance was rooted in the principle — now reaffirmed by the Supreme Court — that citizens have the right to a fair and impartial investigation.

BJP expresses gratitude to court

BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran said in a post on X that the CBI probe was one of the party’s primary demands. “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Supreme Court,” he wrote, adding that the DMK government had allegedly attempted to weave “fabricated tales” to deflect blame for the tragedy.

“Soon, answers will emerge for public suspicions that there is a repulsive political motive behind such actions. Those vile individuals who sacrificed innocent lives for their political vendettas will be punished without mercy,” Nagenthran said.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan, also a BJP leader, called the verdict a “slap on the face of the DMK government.” In a post on X, he alleged that the state government was running a “vicious campaign” against the TVK. “The verdict has given hope that the truth will come out and those responsible will be brought before justice,” he said.

AIADMK and other parties call it a victory for justice

Former interim general secretary of the AIADMK V.K. Sasikala also welcomed the Supreme Court order, describing it as a “resounding slap on the face of the DMK government.” She said she hoped that the probe would reveal the truth behind the incident soon.

Meanwhile, Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan praised the verdict and reiterated that only a CBI inquiry could bring out the truth. “The political functioning post the incident has led to a lot of confusion in the minds of the people. Our party has been seeking a CBI probe to bring out the truth,” he said in a statement.

DMK under scrutiny after Supreme Court order

The DMK government, which had earlier defended its handling of the situation, now faces increased political pressure following the apex court’s directive. Opposition parties have claimed that the state administration’s earlier statements were an attempt to mislead the public and the judiciary.

The Supreme Court’s formation of a three-member committee to monitor the CBI investigation is being seen as a move to ensure accountability and transparency. Political observers say the verdict could have far-reaching implications for the ruling DMK, which has been accused of mismanagement and political interference in the case.

As the CBI takes over the investigation, all eyes are now on the central agency’s next steps and the findings that could potentially reshape the political narrative in Tamil Nadu.
