Chennai: In a tragic incident at least 18 people lost their lives owing to power failure in a hospital in flood-hit Chennai on Friday.
As per sources, some patients were brought to the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (MIOT) Hospital in a critical condition and 18 of them breathed their last after ventilators failed owing to power crisis.
However, the Tamilnadu government has insisted that the reason for the death of 18 patients out of 57 critically ill patients who were shifted to various hospitals was unclear.
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan claiming that there has been no lapses on the part of the government, said that investigations are underway and all the patients have died due to power and oxygen failure and hence there was no lapse on the part of the government.
Condoling the tragic loss of lives, Tamil Nadu Home Secretary also said, “We have made all possible arrangements to provide proper health care to people at all the hospitals.”
Media reports claimed that the incident happened as the generator was in the basement of the MIOT hospital which was flooded.
