Arunachal Pradesh has confirmed its first Covid-19 case in the ongoing surge, a top official from the state health department announced on Wednesday, May 28.

According to State Surveillance Officer Dr. Lobsang Jampa, both a daughter and her mother were found to be infected after RT-PCR tests conducted on Tuesday, May 27. The 34-year-old expectant mother initially showed symptoms such as low-grade fever and a light cough. She had earlier tested positive through a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on Monday.

The woman had travelled to Itanagar from Bengaluru on May 13, the official said. Following the RAT result, a confirmatory RT-PCR test was carried out, which also indicated she was Covid positive.

Her 53-year-old mother was also diagnosed with the virus using the same RT-PCR method. However, she has not shown any symptoms so far. While the pregnant woman is currently being treated in a hospital, her mother is under isolation at home as a preventive measure.

Dr. Jampa emphasized that there is no need for alarm, stating that the circulating strain of the virus appears to be less aggressive than earlier ones.

He assured the public that the health department is maintaining a close watch on the situation and has implemented precautionary measures to contain any spread.

A comprehensive health advisory is expected shortly, pending discussions with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in New Delhi.
