It is commonly known that listening to upbeat music can help patients feel less anxious and pained during uncomfortable procedures. However, when three-year-old Shubhdarshan Singh was admitted to a private hospital in Jagraon, near Ludhiana, recently with a fractured foot, the orthopaedic surgeon and his team were taken aback to discover that the young patient was dancing to the music of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala during the 25-minute procedure performed under local anesthesia.

The boy, who is from Baghapurana town in Moga, was taken to the hospital on April 4 following an automobile accident that fractured his right foot. The child, according to orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Divyanshu Gupta, was talkative but agitated. “Even when we used local anaesthetic to make the foot numb, he refused to allow us to operate on it. We had a conversation with him to help him feel at ease. When asked which singer was his favorite, the boy insisted that we play songs by Sidhu Moose Wala. We turned on his mobile phone’s playlist,” Dr. Gupta remarked.

“Soon, he was comfortable with the environment and started grooving to the songs by raising his hands as though he were doing Bhangra lying on the operation table. To keep him distracted, the staff also performed some dance steps. The surgery went on well and the plaster cast was put on without any difficulty,” the doctor added.

The boy is recovering well and has been discharged from hospital. “He will be able to walk again in a month and a half if things go according to plan,” Dr Gupta said.

He said doctors use phones, games and toys to distract children and reduce anxiety before a surgery and added that music also increases patients’ threshold of pain.

Shubhdarshan was taken to the Moga civil hospital following the accident last week, and from there he was sent to Faridkot. Nevertheless, the boy’s father, Gurprem Singh, enlisted the aid of a non-governmental organization to transport him to a Jagraon private hospital for the operation. His father, who is physically challenged, did not face any financial hardship as a result of the surgery because the family possesses an Ayushman Bharat insurance card. When Shubhdarshan was a baby, his mother passed away. He has two older sisters.

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala, was shot dead by six assailants at Jawahar Ke village in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29, 2022. His parents, Balkaur Singh and Charan Kaur, welcomed a baby boy on March 17, 2024, almost 22 months after the singer was killed in Punjab.
