The highly anticipated Jagannath Rath Yatra 2024 in Puri, Odisha, which is traditionally a one-day event, will span two days this year starting on Sunday, July 7. President Droupadi Murmu, hailing from Mayurbhanj district, will grace the occasion, attracting lakhs of devotees. This extended celebration, last seen in 1971 due to celestial alignments, has prompted special arrangements by the newly elected Odisha government.

In preparation for President Murmu’s visit and to ensure smooth proceedings, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has declared July 7 and 8 as public holidays. The chariots are currently stationed at the Lion’s Gate of the Jagannath temple, ready to embark on their journey to the Gundicha temple, where they will stay for a week.

This year’s Rath Yatra holds special significance as it consolidates several rituals for Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra into a single day on July 7. Typically, these rituals, such as ‘Nabajouban Darshan’ and ‘Netra Utsav’, precede the main procession. ‘Nabajouban Darshan’ marks the deities’ youthful appearance following a 15-day seclusion period known as ‘Anasara’ after ‘Snana Purnima’. During ‘Netra Utsav’, the deities’ eyes are ceremonially painted.

Rooted in ancient tradition, the Rath Yatra, or Chariot Festival, dates back to the Jagannath Temple’s origins in Puri. It commemorates the Holy Trinity’s journey to their aunt’s temple, Goddess Gundicha Devi’s, culminating in their return eight days later.

The Odisha government has meticulously orchestrated arrangements, including stringent security measures with 180 platoons of security forces, a dedicated green corridor for medical emergencies, and advanced CCTV surveillance. A VIP zone awaits dignitaries, while special provisions are in place for President Murmu’s visit, underscoring the event’s significance.

With expectations of a massive turnout, the fire service department has deployed 46 modern fire tenders and measures to combat the anticipated hot weather, ensuring a safe and memorable Rath Yatra for all attendees.
