New Delhi: A major political development unfolded on Friday as Raghav Chadha and two other Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced their decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), triggering sharp reactions from party leadership.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal responded strongly, stating that the BJP had “once again pushed Punjabis aside,” in what he described as a political setback for the party.

MPs announce switch to BJP

Along with Raghav Chadha, MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal confirmed their decision to shift allegiance. Reports indicate that seven out of AAP’s ten Rajya Sabha MPs are expected to merge with the BJP, marking a significant blow to the party’s parliamentary strength.

The move comes amid internal tensions within AAP, with Chadha having recently been removed as deputy leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha and reportedly facing restrictions on speaking in the House.

AAP terms move ‘betrayal of Punjab’

Reacting to the development, AAP leader Sanjay Singh termed the defection a “betrayal of Punjab” and accused the MPs of abandoning the people who had entrusted them with responsibility.

He alleged that central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) were being used to target AAP leaders and destabilise the state government.

Singh further claimed that the BJP was attempting to weaken AAP through what he described as “Operation Lotus,” a term often used by opposition parties to allege efforts to engineer defections.

Bhagwant Mann accuses BJP of destabilisation

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also launched a strong attack on the BJP, accusing it of attempting to destabilise his government through political manoeuvres.

He alleged that the BJP lacked a grassroots base in Punjab and was resorting to tactics aimed at breaking opposition parties. Mann criticised the defecting MPs, calling them “traitors” and questioning their political future within the BJP.

The Chief Minister also referenced similar political developments in other parties, suggesting a pattern of defections orchestrated for strategic gains.

BJP yet to respond in detail

While the BJP has not issued a detailed response to the allegations made by AAP leaders, the development is being seen as a significant political shift, particularly in the context of Punjab politics and parliamentary equations.

Political observers note that such a large-scale defection could alter the balance of power in the Rajya Sabha and have wider implications for national politics.

Political implications ahead

The defection comes at a time when AAP is governing Punjab and seeking to expand its national footprint. Losing key parliamentary leaders could impact its legislative strategy and influence.

At the same time, the BJP stands to gain strength in the upper house if the merger materialises as indicated.

Conclusion

The exit of Raghav Chadha and other MPs has intensified political tensions between AAP and the BJP, with accusations and counter-accusations dominating the discourse. As the situation develops, its impact on both Punjab politics and the broader national landscape will be closely watched.
