New Delhi: Raghav Chadha’s Z+ category security cover provided by the Punjab Police has been withdrawn, sources said on Wednesday, in a move seen as politically significant amid his growing rift with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Chadha, who represents Punjab in the Rajya Sabha, has now been shifted to a central security arrangement. As an interim measure, the Delhi Police has been directed to provide him protection until a formal central cover is finalised.
Political tensions intensify within AAP
The development comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Chadha and the AAP leadership. Recently, the party removed him from the post of deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, triggering a public response from the MP.
Reacting to his removal, Chadha stated that he had been “silenced, not defeated,” indicating a deepening divide within the party.
Party leaders have criticised him for allegedly failing to raise Punjab-specific issues effectively in Parliament and for adopting what they described as a “soft PR” approach instead of taking a more aggressive stand against the Centre.
Chadha rejects allegations
Chadha has strongly denied the accusations, calling them “lies” and asserting that his parliamentary approach focuses on constructive engagement rather than disruption.
He also refuted claims that he avoided key opposition strategies such as walkouts or signing notices against constitutional authorities.
Social media signals future course
Since his removal, Chadha has been active on social media, posting content that many interpret as indirect criticism of the party leadership.
In one instance, he responded “interesting thought” to a video suggesting he should float a new political party, sparking speculation about his political future.
He also shared an image referencing a chapter titled “Never Outshine the Master,” widely seen as a veiled remark aimed at AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
In another post, Chadha shared a video titled “Voice Raised Price Paid,” highlighting his parliamentary interventions and defending his performance.
Security shift raises questions
The withdrawal of Z+ security by the Punjab Police and transition to central protection has drawn attention, as such decisions are typically based on threat assessments but can also carry political undertones.
Officials have not publicly disclosed the reasons behind the change, but sources indicate it was implemented last week.
Conclusion
The security reshuffle, coupled with Chadha’s removal from a key party position, underscores the widening rift within the AAP. As speculation grows over his next political move, the developments could have broader implications for both Chadha’s career and the party’s internal dynamics.
