In a spirited address in Wayanad, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi underscored the critical importance of protecting the Constitution of India. Speaking at a corner meeting in Mananthavady on Sunday, he articulated that the nation’s current struggle revolves around the preservation of constitutional values. His comments were part of the campaign efforts for his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is contesting the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll.

Rahul Gandhi stated, “The main fight in the country today is the fight for the Constitution of our country.” He articulated that the Constitution is the bedrock of the nation’s identity and strength. Emphasising the humility and love that shaped its creation, he remarked, “The Constitution was not written with anger or hatred. It was written by those who fought the British, those who suffered, and those who spent years in jail.”

Gandhi framed the current socio-political landscape as a struggle between love and hatred, confidence and insecurity. He implored his audience to embrace compassion, urging them to “remove anger from your heart, by removing hatred from your heart, and replacing them with love, humility and compassion.”

Reflecting on his sister’s character, Rahul shared poignant childhood memories, highlighting Priyanka’s empathy and compassion. He recounted a moment when she hugged Nalini, a woman implicated in their father Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, showcasing her commitment to understanding and human connection. “That is the training that she has received,” he said, indicating that this approach to politics, rooted in love and affection, is essential for India’s future.

Priyanka Gandhi, meanwhile, has been actively campaigning against the ruling government, particularly targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies. During her addresses, she alleged that Modi’s administration prioritises the interests of wealthy business allies over the welfare of ordinary citizens. “Modi ji’s government works only for his big businessman friends. His objective is not to give you a better life,” she asserted, pointing to a perceived failure to create jobs or improve public services.

As the Congress duo continues their campaign in Kerala, their focus remains on promoting a message of love and constitutional integrity against the backdrop of a politically charged environment. With Priyanka making her electoral debut, the Wayanad bypoll represents a significant moment for both siblings as they seek to galvanise support by advocating for a compassionate and inclusive approach to governance.
