New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), branding it the “Brasht (Corrupt) Janata Party” and alleging that its “double-engine” governments across states have destroyed people’s lives through corruption, abuse of power, and arrogance. He claimed that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-touted double-engine model runs efficiently for billionaires, it has brought devastation rather than development for ordinary citizens.

In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi alleged that BJP-led governments have turned governance into an extortion-driven system in the name of development, where the lives of the poor, labourers, the helpless, and the middle class are reduced to mere statistics. He said the consequences of this style of governance are visible across the country in the form of crimes, institutional failure, and loss of life.

Allegations of systemic corruption and abuse of power

Rahul Gandhi asserted that corruption and the misuse of power have seeped into every level of BJP’s political structure. According to him, arrogance at the top has translated into insensitivity on the ground, leaving citizens without justice or protection.

“Across the country, the ‘Brasht’ Janata Party’s double-engine governments have ruined people’s lives. Corruption, abuse of power, and the poison of arrogance have spread from top to bottom,” he wrote, adding that development under the BJP has become synonymous with exploitation.

He alleged that under BJP rule, governance priorities have shifted away from public welfare and towards protecting powerful interests. “This double-engine government of corruption is not development, but the speed of devastation—crushing someone’s life every day,” he said.

Reference to high-profile crime cases

Citing specific incidents, Rahul Gandhi referred to the murder of Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand, which had sparked nationwide outrage. He said the case raised serious questions about accountability and equality before the law.

“The brutal murder of Ankita Bhandari shook the entire nation, but the question still remains— which BJP VIP is being protected by those in power? When will the law be equal for all?” he asked, suggesting that influential individuals were shielded due to political connections.

Referring to the Unnao rape case in Uttar Pradesh, he said the entire country had witnessed how perpetrators were allegedly protected due to the arrogance of power. He added that the victim had to pay a heavy price in her long struggle for justice, which, according to him, exposed the deep flaws in the system.

Public health and civic failures

Rahul Gandhi also pointed to what he described as repeated failures in public health and civic administration. He cited deaths caused by drinking contaminated water in Indore and alleged complaints of polluted water supply from states such as Gujarat and Haryana, as well as from the national capital.

“Whether it is deaths from drinking contaminated water or the fear of disease due to polluted supply, the threat to public health is everywhere,” he claimed, accusing governments of neglecting basic civic responsibilities.

He argued that access to clean drinking water, healthcare, and sanitation—fundamental duties of the state—have been compromised due to corruption and poor governance.

Environmental damage and corporate interests

Expanding his criticism, Rahul Gandhi alleged that environmental degradation across several regions was driven by unchecked corporate greed. He referred to mining and infrastructure projects in ecologically sensitive zones, including the Aravalli range in Rajasthan, claiming that rules were being trampled to benefit a few large corporate players.

“From the Aravalli range to other natural resources, wherever the greed and self-interest of billionaires have reached, laws have been violated. Mountains are being cut down, forests destroyed, and what the public gets in return is dust, pollution, and disaster,” he said.

According to him, such practices not only harm the environment but also endanger the livelihoods and health of local communities.

Infrastructure failures and institutional neglect

Rahul Gandhi further cited incidents such as the deaths of children allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrup, rats killing newborns in government hospitals, and the collapse of roofs in government schools. He said these incidents were not isolated acts of negligence but direct consequences of corruption and systemic decay.

“Bridges collapse, roads cave in, families are wiped out in train accidents,” he said, adding that the government’s response often remained limited to photo opportunities, social media posts, and formal announcements of compensation.

He alleged that there was a lack of accountability and meaningful reform after such tragedies, leading to their repetition across different parts of the country.

Political message ahead

The remarks by Rahul Gandhi come amid heightened political activity, with opposition parties intensifying attacks on the BJP over governance, accountability, and social justice. His comments signal an attempt to frame the national political narrative around alleged governance failures, corruption, and the growing gap between economic growth and public welfare.

Conclusion

By branding the BJP as the “Brasht Janata Party” and targeting its double-engine governance model, Rahul Gandhi has sharpened the opposition’s critique of the ruling party. While the BJP has repeatedly defended its record on development and infrastructure, the Congress leader’s remarks reflect an effort to highlight human costs, social inequities, and institutional lapses. As political discourse intensifies, these allegations are likely to remain at the centre of debate in the months ahead.
