Imphal: Heavy rain in Manipur on Saturday forced Prime Minister Narendra Modi to abandon his planned helicopter travel and instead take the road to Churachandpur, about 61 km from Imphal. The drive took roughly 1.5 hours.
First visit since 2023 unrest
This is the Prime Minister’s first visit to the state since the ethnic clashes of May 2023, which left hundreds dead and displaced thousands. His first stop was Peace Ground in Churachandpur, followed by a visit to Kangla Fort, a site of cultural and political importance in Imphal.
Road journey amid rain
Authorities had advised against helicopter travel due to poor weather. Sources said the Prime Minister insisted on travelling by road to ensure he could meet people waiting at the venue.
Addressing a large gathering in Churachandpur, PM Modi said:
“I salute the spirit of the people of Manipur. Even in such heavy rain, you came here in such large numbers. My helicopter could not fly, but I was glad to travel by road. The warmth and affection I saw along the way will remain unforgettable.”
Message of support and peace
The Prime Minister assured citizens that the Union government is working to restore normalcy in Manipur. He appealed to all communities to adopt the path of peace and harmony.
“I promise you today that the Government of India stands firmly with the people of Manipur,” he said.
