New Delhi: The fallout after Rahul Gandhi’s comment on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots only seems to be getting worse with each day that passes by. The latest blatant public and a rather personal attack on the Congress chief has come from Delhi BJP spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga.

On August 27, Tajinder tweeted an image and a video of a banner on Twitter that read ‘Rajiv Gandhi is Father of Mob Lynching’, which have now gone viral. These banners, it is learnt, have been placed in various places across the nation’s capital city. Many have replied to the tweet in support of the move, some even praising Tajinder for his ‘display of courage and outburst of emotions to expose the criminals’, as one Twitter user put it.

Rahul’s denial of the involvement of the Congress party in the riots seems to have reopened the wounds of the Sikh community. After the Akali Dal and some members of the BJP took turns attacking the Congress chief for his remarks on the riots during an event in the United Kingdom Parliament. “I have no confusion in my mind about that. It was a tragedy, it was a painful experience. You say that the Congress party was involved in that, I don’t agree with that. Certainly, there was violence, certainly, there was tragedy,” he had said.

His comment was taken as a direct contradiction of the Congress party’s stance on the tragedy as former prime minister Manmohan Singh had apologised for the riots in the Parliament back in 2005. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who came out in defence of the Congress president, was criticised for hurting the sentiments of Sikhs across the country.
