A 26-year-old bike taxi rider was killed after being run over by a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) water tanker in East Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Sunday afternoon, police said.
The victim, identified as Jubair Ali, was working as a rider with bike taxi app Rapido. He was a resident of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh.
Accident reported near SDM office
According to police, a PCR call was received at the Geeta Colony police station around 3.30 pm reporting a road accident near the SDM office. A police team rushed to the spot and found the man trapped under the rear tyre of a loaded water tanker.
Despite wearing a helmet, the victim’s head was completely crushed due to the impact, police said. He was declared dead at the scene.
No eyewitnesses, driver absconds
Police officials said no eyewitnesses were found at the accident site at the time of initial investigation. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Authorities confirmed that the tanker involved in the accident was an authorised vehicle of the Delhi Jal Board. However, the driver fled the spot immediately after the incident.
“The tanker and the victim’s motorcycle have been seized. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the driver,” a police officer said.
Case registered, probe underway
A case has been registered, and further investigation is in progress to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident. Police said mechanical inspection of the vehicles will also be conducted as part of the probe.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and accountability involving heavy government vehicles operating in residential areas of the national capital.
