In a rare and heartening find, a baby gray slender loris, a nocturnal and endangered primate, was rescued in Mangattidam, Kannur district, Kerala, on Saturday evening. The elusive creature was spotted by Shamseer, a member of the Malabar Awareness and Rescue Centre (MARC).

A team of environmentalists—Riaz Mangad, Bijilesh Kodiyeri, Jishnu Panangavu, Sandeep, Namitha Pavithran, Priyesh, and Muhammed—swiftly moved the baby loris to the Kannur District Veterinary Hospital. There, a medical team led by Dr Nawas, veterinary surgeon, examined the animal and confirmed it to be in recoverable condition.

According to officials, once the loris regains health, it will be rehabilitated and released into its natural forest habitat by the Forest Department.

Scientifically known as Loris lydekkerianus, the gray slender loris is recognized for its large eyes, long limbs, white facial markings, and tailless body. Adults can reach up to two feet in length and weigh around four kilograms. These tree-dwelling mammals are strictly nocturnal, hunting for insects and small prey at night and camouflaging in the treetops during the day.

This rescue highlights the importance of continued conservation efforts and public awareness of forest biodiversity.
