A routine attempt to deal with rats at a home in Bihar’s West Champaran district took a startling turn when a cage trap intended for rodents caught a large venomous cobra instead.
The unusual incident was reported in Laxmipur under the Nautan police station area of Bettiah, where the snake’s unexpected appearance frightened the family and attracted a crowd of curious villagers.
Family expected a rat but found a cobra
According to local reports published on September 1 and 2, the family of Chhabila Chaurasia had been troubled by rats around their house and placed a cage trap near the property.
The trap was left overnight. When the family checked it the following morning, they expected to find a rat inside. Instead, they were shocked to discover a black cobra trapped in the cage and repeatedly hissing.
The situation quickly drew the attention of people in the area, with villagers gathering to see the unusual catch. Some reportedly arrived to take photographs and record videos of the snake.
Wildlife officials were alerted
Concerned about the danger posed by the venomous reptile, the family informed the authorities rather than attempting to open the cage themselves.
The incident also highlighted the risks associated with handling snakes, particularly when they are trapped or frightened. A defensive snake can become dangerous if people attempt to approach or release it without proper training.
Why a cobra entered a rat trap
The unusual catch has a simple ecological explanation. Indian cobras are predators that feed on animals including rodents, frogs and birds. The presence of rodents around a house can therefore attract snakes looking for prey.
However, it cannot be established that the cobra entered the cage specifically while pursuing a rat.
Snake encounters can also become more common during periods of heavy rain and flooding, when reptiles may be forced from their usual hiding places.
The incident serves as a reminder that residents should avoid handling trapped snakes themselves. Trained wildlife or Forest Department personnel should be contacted whenever a venomous snake is found near a home.
What began as an ordinary attempt to catch a household pest thus became an unexpected wildlife encounter, leaving the family and villagers startled by the dangerous surprise inside the cage.
