The small space under a tree in Chandni Chowk’s cycle market, just enough to park a goods cart, has remained vacant since Monday night. It was here that 32-year-old Bilal Ahmad Masood, popularly known as “Kashmiri,” used to operate his cart and live.

“Kashmiri yahaan apni rickshaw lagaata tha (Kashmiri used to park his rickshaw here),” said 45-year-old Shiv Singh Nagar, a friend of the deceased. “We still can’t believe he is gone.”

Bilal succumbed to injuries sustained during the Red Fort blast on Monday evening, becoming the tenth fatality in the attack. The explosion, which occurred near the historic monument in Delhi, left dozens injured and sent shockwaves through the area. Bilal was critically wounded and had been receiving treatment at a city hospital before his death on Thursday.

Life in Chandni Chowk

Bilal Ahmad Masood had migrated from Kashmir in search of work and a livelihood. Known for his quiet demeanor and dedication to his work, he was a familiar figure in the crowded lanes of Chandni Chowk, both as a rickshaw operator and as a part of the local community.

Friends and neighbours recall him as a hardworking man who rarely left his small corner under the tree. “He was humble and always helped others whenever he could,” Shiv Singh Nagar added, reflecting the loss felt by the local community.

Investigation underway

The Red Fort blast is currently under investigation by central agencies, with authorities examining all possible leads. Security has been tightened in the area, and officials continue to monitor the crowded tourist and commercial hub.

The explosion has sparked widespread concern, highlighting vulnerabilities in public safety and emergency preparedness in high-density urban spaces. Residents and shopkeepers have expressed grief and fear while urging authorities to ensure better protection in public areas.

Bilal’s death has left a poignant mark on Chandni Chowk, with his vacant spot under the tree standing as a stark reminder of the human cost of the tragedy. The community has come together to mourn his loss and support his family during this difficult time.
