A remand prisoner at Kannur Central Jail died by suicide early on Tuesday, according to prison authorities. The deceased has been identified as Jilson, a native of Kenichira in Wayanad, who had been lodged at the facility for the past seven months.
Prisoners alerted officials immediately
The incident reportedly occurred around 5.30 am, when other inmates noticed that Jilson had harmed himself with a sharp object. They immediately informed prison staff, who rushed him to a nearby hospital. Despite medical intervention, he could not be saved.
His body has been shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Pariyaram, for post-mortem examination.
Officials say he had a history of suicide attempts
Jail authorities said that Jilson had previously attempted suicide multiple times while lodged at the Mananthavady Sub Jail before being transferred to Kannur Central Jail. Recognising the risk, officials had arranged regular counselling sessions for him.
They also noted that he was a talented painter and had been preparing to showcase his artwork through a planned exhibition inside the prison.
Background of the case
Jilson, formerly employed as a plumber with the Kerala Water Authority, had been under trial for the alleged murder of his wife in April 2024, on the eve of Vishu. He had reportedly attempted to take his own life shortly after the incident.
Police have initiated an inquest, and further proceedings will follow upon completion of the autopsy.
