Kolkata — The father of the RG Kar rape-murder victim has alleged that his wife was refused admission to a private hospital under pressure from the West Bengal government, a day after she was injured during a protest march in the city.
The victim’s mother reportedly sustained forehead, hand, and back injuries during what she described as a “police lathicharge” on Saturday’s rally to the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’, marking one year since her daughter’s death. A CT scan and other tests were conducted, and the attending doctor initially advised two days of hospital care.
However, the father claimed that once the doctor left, hospital staff began delaying her admission before ultimately stating they were under “pressure from the state government.” She was discharged by Sunday afternoon after an overnight stay, despite earlier advice for observation.
The mother accused women police personnel of assaulting her at Park Street crossing during the march. “Police pinned me to the ground, broke my ‘shankha’ (traditional conch shell bangle), and injured my forehead,” she said, adding that four to five officers were involved.
Police have denied using force on the victim’s parents and maintain that the march was handled lawfully. The father also alleged police attempted to block the family from joining the rally despite a court order allowing a peaceful protest.
