Eggs, once among the most affordable sources of protein for Indian households, are becoming increasingly expensive, prompting many families to cut back on their purchases.

A LocalCircles survey covering more than 67,000 responses from households across 287 districts found that 62 per cent of respondents had seen egg prices rise by 10-50 per cent or more over the past six months. Nearly half, or 48 per cent, said they had reduced the quantity or frequency of their purchases.

Egg prices climb sharply across markets

The survey found that 84 per cent of respondents had experienced some increase in egg prices. Ex-farm prices have risen to around Rs 7 per egg from about Rs 4.94 a year earlier, while retail prices in several markets have reached Rs 8.50-9.

Rising poultry feed costs are a major factor. Feed accounts for around 65-70 per cent of egg production costs, with maize forming a significant share. Higher demand for maize from the ethanol industry has added pressure on supplies and prices.

Heat and feed costs add to the pressure

The supply situation has also been affected by extreme summer heat. According to the survey report, more than 16 lakh birds died in the layer belt of coastal Andhra Pradesh, reducing egg-laying capacity in the region.

The pressure could intensify during winter, when egg consumption traditionally increases.

Government nutrition programmes are also feeling the impact. In Odisha, schools and anganwadi centres are reportedly paying around Rs 9-10 for an egg against a government-fixed rate of Rs 7.

Families stretch their egg purchases

For consumers, the price rise is changing everyday food choices. While most families have not stopped buying eggs altogether, many are purchasing fewer eggs, buying them less frequently or searching for cheaper sources.

The survey also found widespread concerns about egg safety and adulteration, with 90 per cent of respondents expressing some level of concern.

The findings highlight how a rise in the price of a common breakfast food can affect household nutrition.
