A tragic incident at Platform 6 of Gaya Junction on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of two passengers who attempted to board a moving train in a rush to secure seats.
The victims were identified as Saryu Prasad (66), a resident of the Dihri police station area in Jehanabad district, and Mohd Khalid Alam (27) from Barachatti in Gaya district. Both died on the spot after slipping into the gap between the platform and the moving train.
Lost balance amid rush for seats
According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the incident occurred as the Gaya–New Delhi Mahabodhi Express entered the platform from the washing pit line. Several passengers waiting on the platform reportedly rushed towards the train even before it came to a complete halt.
In the chaos, the two men lost their balance and fell between the bogie and the platform. They were fatally struck by the moving train.
GRP Gaya Station House Officer Shiv Kumar Yadav said the mishap was triggered by overcrowding and passengers’ urgency to grab seats. Family members of the deceased have been informed.
Train departs late after tragedy
Following the incident, the train departed approximately 30 minutes behind schedule. The bodies were shifted to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination.
The heartbreaking incident underscores the serious risks associated with boarding or alighting from moving trains. Railway authorities have repeatedly advised passengers to wait until trains come to a complete stop, stressing that a few moments of impatience can result in irreversible loss.
