The in-charge of the Sankat Mochan police outpost, Naveen Chaturvedi, was suspended on Saturday night following a video that showed him violently beating two youths. The footage, which went viral on social media, prompted immediate action. “Upon reviewing the viral video, the in-charge was suspended, and a departmental probe was initiated,” said Gaurav Banswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the Kashi zone.
According to the initial investigation, the incident occurred about 10 days ago when two local youths, Sonu Sonkar and Deepak Jaiswal, were assaulted by a group of musclemen. After the attack, both groups were summoned to the police outpost for questioning. During the interrogation, the suspects allegedly misbehaved with Chaturvedi and the officers, which caused the outpost in-charge to lose his temper and violently assault the accused.
The case dates back to February 2, when Sonu and Deepak were attacked by Nimesh Rai and Ashish Chaubey, students residing in a hostel in Saketnagar, Bihar. The two youths suffered injuries and filed a complaint with the police. After identifying the assailants using CCTV footage, Nimesh and Ashish were brought to the Sankat Mochan police outpost for questioning, where the altercation occurred.
The viral video showed Chaturvedi physically dragging and mistreating the accused, prompting widespread outrage. Following the incident, social activists demanded accountability. The DCP initially attached Chaturvedi to the police line and, by Sunday night, ordered his suspension. ACP Bhelupur has been tasked with investigating the matter further. Meanwhile, additional CCTV footage showing the brutal assault by Nimesh and Ashish on Sonu and Deepak also surfaced, adding to the scrutiny of the entire situation. All the footage and evidence are being thoroughly examined by the authorities.
